Tiny Guardians in the Apricot Tree

This past Spring, while trimming back my apricot tree, I stumbled upon something unexpected — not one, but two praying mantis egg sacs nestled along the undersides of the branches. At first, I was simply intrigued. But as I leaned in for a closer look, I realized one of them was beginning to hatch.

Over the next several days, as the sun gradually warmed the egg sac, tiny white mantises began to emerge. Most of them marching down the branch, as if they knew exactly where they were heading. Some clung to each other like delicate chains, swaying in the breeze — an oddly familiar sight that reminded me of the old Barrel of Monkeys game from childhood. It was both surreal and mesmerizing.

I’ve always believed the praying mantis to be a sign of good luck. In Native American traditions, they’re seen as protectors and guides. Other cultures consider them symbols of stillness and meditation — the embodiment of mindfulness. And yet, in some parts of the world, their appearance is thought to bring misfortune, even to serve as a bad omen.

Maybe that’s the beauty of symbols — they reflect not just tradition but our personal perspective. For me, seeing a praying mantis, especially at such a vulnerable, miraculous stage of life, feels like a small blessing. A gentle reminder to slow down. To pay attention. Even if they do nibble on the edges of my flowers now and then, I welcome them in my garden.
